Piles of work: The Awly Building multiplex on Durham Street is off to a good start with the installation of 88 piles now underway.

Smith Civil's Bauer drilling rig will bore piles of 900 and 1200mm diameter down to depths of 23-30 metres, providing the 5-storey multiplex with solid foundations.

The Awly Building is widely regarded as Christchurch's first major rebuild project, comprising five stories of architecturally designed office space spanning the width of a city block from Gloucester to Armagh.

The piling work by Smiths Civil and Smithbridge New Zealand, which includes bored and sheet piling, is expected to take six months and is the largest of its type in New Zealand.

Plant being used includes:

• Bauer BG 25C drilling rig

• Kobelco CKE-2500 250-tonne crawler crane

• Kobelco SK-350 35-tonne excavator

• ICE 1416 vibro
