Kiwirail's Bridge 72 replacement underway at Inchbonnie

Smith Civil Engineering's works at Camp Creek, Inchbonnie are now well underway with the $1.5M works scheduled for completion by July.

The works, which began in late February, include six 900mm bored piles sunk to a depth of 38 metres to support a new 28 metre bridge deck.

Smith Crane & Construction have eight staff on-site who are staying in temporary accommodation "just down the road" at Jacksons.

The remote location "comes with its own challenges" said one employee who had laid half-a-kilometer of phone cable down a creek bed to a neighboring farm. With no cellphone coverage, the only other means of communication available to staff is the company's satellite phone.
