Mill Creek windfarm goes live today

Wellington’s second wind farm goes ‘live’ today when Prime Minister John Key formally switches on turbines at Meridian Energy’s Mill Creek.

So far six turbines have been installed and two are now producing electricity.

With a capacity of 59.8MW, Mill Creek will increase the amount of electricity produced by wind from approximately 10 to 12 percent of the company’s total annual production.

Mill Creek and the neighbouring West Wind windfarm will power roughly the equivalent of all the homes in Wellington and most of Lower Hutt.

Construction of Mill Creek commenced in August 2012. All 26 turbines are expected to be operating by late August 2014. Smith Cranes have been on-site providing cranes and expert crews for the term of the project.
