27 May 2014Demolition over in flash
Few passersby watched as the former outpatients building at Ashburton Hospital suffered a two-pronged attack yesterday and was demolished by machinery.
The demolition work started just before lunch and in a matter of minutes the top layer had been destroyed – pushed into the hollowed out building’s shell. A water tank was used to dampen down dust.
Once the demolition work is completed and the site cleared, it is expected a plan will be finalised for the removal of the former therapy services building further inside the hospital grounds.
The buildings suffered earthquake damage. But the demolition work was hampered by both the former outpatients’ buildings, and the old theatre building containing asbestos-contaminated soil. SOURCE: Toni Williams, Ashburton Guardian
