Retaining Walls – Lyttelton

2012 – Canterbury St and Rippon St.

BRIEF

The Lyttelton retaining walls project essentially became a design and build project due to the original block design not being available. Smith Crane and Construction along with Stonestrong NZ Ltd redesigned the wall using a much more practical system that resulted in both cost savings to the client and as well as decreasing the time on site and disruption to the residents.

Initially the excavations for the walls were relatively straight forward in the early parts when there was a very hard clay layer encountered which allowed the bank to hold up. Unfortunately though we were constructing during the winter months and we had to contend with inclement weather. The rain caused the top road to become undermined and we had to sheetpile a wall for approximately 40m to save the road and maintain a safe working area for employees. Sheetpiling was not logical on one wall so we shotcreted as shown above.

We have completed the foundation construction which includes 600mm diameter piles instead of the original anchor system. This solved the solution for the easement issues the client was having with anchors. The height of the walls varies from 2 – 4.5m.
