Cool under pressure: Record-breaking lift at Christchurch Hospital

Smith Cranes has completed a record-breaking lift for the CDHB in lifting the replacement 1.65-tonne cooler unit to the roof from a distance of 84m.

David Brown Contractors had approached Smith Cranes to handle this technically challenging lift that was completed overnight within an 11-hour timeframe.

The Hospital had to remain open, and due to the vicinity of underground services no crane could be erected inside the grounds. This pushed the exclusion zone out to 84m on the road below and required traffic management.

Custom crane pads were built to reduce the radius to 83m allowing the 29m fly jib-equipped Grove GMK6300L 300-tonne all-terrain crane and its 80m boom to perform the lift.

Smith Crane worked with David Brown, Men@ Work Traffic Management and the CDHB Hospital to clear a safe route for the lift over the hospital grounds.

The crane can also handle lifts of up to 0.9 tonnes at a radius of 94 metres.
