BRIEF

Cut and crane method deconstruction of an 18 storey high rise. This is described as the most complex and dangerous demolition to be undertaken post earthquake due to the unstable nature of the structure. Over 600 steel brackets weighing a total of 30 ton had to be installed from the top level to ground level. This was at a cost of $400,000 before the building could be accessed to start deconstruction.

The building has been cut apart level be level with high frequency diamond wire saws at a rate of approximately 1 level every eight days.

Proudly Smith Crane and Construction had designed a waste management plan that has diverted 95% of the buildings elements and material from landfill for reuse in numerous forms.

New Zealand’s largest crane was purchased specifically for this contract and weighs in at 550 ton.
